Hearing Chip Caray and Brad Thompson Cry On Air Last Night, Over Miles Mikolas Being Ejected For Throwing At Ian Happ, Was Textbook St. Louis Cardinals Baseball
The Cubs are down in the home place of John Goodman and Nelly, "The Lou" as they call it, for a four game set.
Last night's game got off to a bizarre start. Ian Happ hit former teammate Wilson Contreras in the back of the head on his backswing and knocked Contreras out of the game.
Contreras was actually bleeding from it so he got a nice egg on his noggin for sure.
The two hugged it out and you could see from the video Happ legitimately felt bad about hurting Contreras, apologizing profusely.
Happ isn't one of those guys who's constantly doing this, or being instructed by umpires to dig into the box because he's outside the back of the batter's box. This was a total fluke. And he was remorseful because that's just the kind of guy Ian Happ. Real salt of the Earth good dude.
But that shit doesn't fly in Cardinals country. No siree Jack.
The Cardinals wrote the book on "The Unwritten Rules of Baseball" and if you don't believe me, just ask their fans, the self-proclaimed "greatest fans in baseball". They'll tell you.
So of course, pitcher Miles Mikolas took matters into his own hands. The next pitch he threw high and inside at Happ, missing hitting him. The next one connected with Happ's ass (which is honestly the best place to get hit if you're gonna get drilled). The umps conferred at midfield and decided to toss Mikolas.
Overreaction? Sure. Overreaction to an overreaction? Yes.
It was the first inning, in the first game of a four-game series between divisional rivals, and was the result of a fluke accident.
But none of that got in the way of Chip Caray and Brad Thompson from decrying the umps for "having no feel for baseball." (Classic sanctimonious Cardinals speak).
Laugh out loud funny.
Mikolas took it one step further by shooting his mouth off and mean-mugging the Cubs' dugout, trying to engage them, which only ended up drawing this reaction.
Tough year for Chip and the boys.
